It may come as a surprise to some, but some of the hottest pickers in Austin don’t even have their driver’s license, yet. They are the members of the unique guitar ensemble, Austin Bella Corda. This talented group consists of eight middle- and high-school guitarists between the ages of 11 and 17, all from the Central Texas area.
Austin Bella Corda is directed by Kevin Taylor, teacher and founder of the national Childbloom Guitar program, who also serves as composer and arranger for the group. “These kids are individually among the best young guitarists in the country.” says Taylor. “Put them together and they make music that’s very unique, both in the classical guitar world, and out!” When asked to describe the group’s music, Taylor says, “They break the mold – Renaissance, Afropop, American Folk and World music – all artistically done and although they are all classically trained, hardly traditional ‘classical’”.
Taylor’s sentiments are echoed by Professor Mark Cruz, head of the guitar department at Texas State University. Cruz says, “It is a rare thing to hear a young and gifted guitarist. To hear more than one is an enormous delight. Bella Corda is an invitation to something fresh and exciting and delivers promise to the future of classical guitar.”
