June 1, 2009 - Two Austin Bella Corda members received a Superior, ranking at the UIL Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest (TSSEC) last weekend in Austin. Ryan Voldstad, 16, Junior, Westwood HS, played “Granada” by Albeniz. Anna Macdonald, 16, Sophomore, Westlake HS, played “Prelude #4” by Villa-Lobos. Both received the highest rating possible.
In addition, Ryan also received the Outstanding Soloist Award.
To qualify for the TSSEC, a student must first receive a Superior rating at the region solo and ensemble contest on a Class 1 solo. Class 1 is the highest class of difficulty, and it must be performed from memory. To be eligible for Outstanding Soloist, the student must receive a Superior at state and be recognized as Outstanding by his judge.
This is Ryan’s third year to participate in the TSSEC, and it’s his third year to win Outstanding Soloist. In the past several years, there have been only three guitar students a year from the state to win this honor.
Ryan and Anna are long-time students of the Childbloom Guitar Program, and members of Austin Bella Corda guitar ensemble.
